Certainly rapid industralization in the west should take the bulk of the blame! It's unfair to focus attention on developing nations like Malaysia. Some even use the Penans to champion their seemingly biased cause. The Rape Case of the poor Penan lass had been overblown amid the fact that, the majority of the Penans are unaware of the issue.
The following was in my email today:
"PLEASE help the Penans of Sarawak - I first read about them and their plight in Al Gore's first book, Earth in the balance...they are facing Extinction ! ( and I visited one of their pathetic makeshift villages back in the late 1980s.)
Sign this..and forward it....let's join the caring Europeans/Americans like Dr Glen Barry who are trying to halt this terrible destruction of forest and its inhabitants. ....LOVE"
